• Excellent Teachers - Our certified teachers meet New York City Department of Day Care requirements and many hold advanced degrees in education. Committed to excellence in teaching and learning, the school provides funds to assist teachers in their degree studies and for continuing education opportunities. Over the years, teachers at Queens Lutheran School have been distinguished for their teaching excellence by being listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers and by receiving regional "Teacher of the Year" recognition.

• Excellent Curriculum - Queens Lutheran School follows the curriculum guidelines and standards established by the New York State Department of Education and exceeds these requirements through its enhanced programming and enriched academic courses. The curriculum is reviewed and updated regularly. Queens Lutheran School holds an Absolute Charter from the New York State Board of Regents.

• Excellent Students, Promising Futures - Queens Lutheran School students consistently score above the national and local average on standardized and New York State tests. Our students often qualify as area and regional finalists in spelling contests and in other challenges. Our eighth grade students are well prepared for their high school entrance exams and score well on the Catholic Cooperative Exam and specialized high school test. Many of our students qualify for acceptance to prestigious high schools and continue to excel throughout their high school experience due to the fine educational foundation they received at our school. Recently five students were accepted at Brooklyn Technical High School, five at St. Francis Prep School, one at Townsend Harris High School, one at Information Technology High School and several received full scholarships.

Most importantly, at Queens Lutheran School children learn and grow in their understanding about who they are as children of a loving God and about God's purpose and promise for their lives. By attending Queens Lutheran School, a child is prepared for a life of faith and learning.

Non-Discriminatory Policy:

Queens Lutheran School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin, and grant to all, the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Our Children - Our Future

We have been working at Queens Lutheran School and have some exciting plans to share with you. For over 50 years Queens Lutheran School has been rich in academic achievements. Our students year after year get into the top NYC public and private high schools. This is in good part to our fine teachers who have been with our school for years and are dedicated to helping each and every student do his and her very best.

As we plan for the future we will keep in mind our rich academic excellence while expanding our program to meet the challenges of globalization that face our children today. In the work places of the 21st Century we are called on to work in collaborative teams, have computer skills and work with people of different ages, cultures and abilities. With those goals in mind Queens Lutheran School, offers a cutting edge concept in education, the multiage classroom.

The multiage classroom is the deliberate grouping of students across grade levels to form a single learning community that meets the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of the children. Some of the benefits of a multiage classroom are that it allows for flexibility of grouping and time, and it gives students the opportunity to become more independent responsible learners.

We hope that you will be as excited as we are about the new direction Queens Lutheran School is taking as it becomes the cutting edge Academy in Astoria.

The Multiage Classroom

Queens Lutheran School is fortunate to have a strong academic faculty all of whom have been teaching for over 20 years. Three of the teaching staff have been awarded "Teacher of the Year" by the Lutheran Schools Association.

• Parent Participation: Having a partnership with our parents is essential to the successful achievement of our students. We will strive to keep you informed of your child's progress and welcome your participation in the classroom whenever possible.

• What is multiage education?: A classroom is "multiage" when it is deliberately grouped across age levels instead of chronological age. Children of different ages (at least a two year span) and ability levels are grouped together without dividing them into groups that are designated by grade levels. Whenever possible students remain in the same classroom with the same teacher for two years.

• How can teachers effectively teach students of two different grade levels?: Grade level expectations are set at the city and state level in accordance with K-12 knowledge and performance standards. Parents have a right to expect that their children will get age appropriate curriculum meeting certain standards. Very few children are "on grade level" in everything they do, nor should this be expected. Most children are above or below "grade level" in numerous skills and abilities. For this reason in a multiage classroom we look at your child's development along a continuum - at one end is what we expect as student's begin school and at the other end is independent mastery. In between these two endpoints are many finite steps through which students progress as they learn and gain experience. To assist your child on his/her development along a continuum, we consider exactly what your child can do, what your child has done in the past and what you child needs to do in order to perform successfully at the next level on the continuum. As we identify where your child fits on the continuum, we can teach exactly to his/her needs. This is the heart of personalized learning and individual instruction. A student's readiness and performance has more bearing on what he/she is taught than on his/her grade level.

• Will my child receive curriculum appropriate for his/her grade level?: Whether in a single grade of a multigrade setting, your child will receive a "grade appropriate" curriculum, although it may look differently than it has in the past. Teachers begin each year knowing what their students must know and be able to do before they move to the next grade. With that said, teachers have the freedom to prepare their students using whatever instructional methods they find effective.

Each teacher naturally approaches the year differently, even when teaching the same grade level, because each have different styles, and more importantly, different students.

As mentioned before most learning can be measured along a continuum of development. This is especially true for reading, writing and math - three areas in which concepts are similar at different grade levels and instruction involves extending what has been previously learned. Much learning in science and social studies can be viewed in the same way. Many processes and skills extend across "grade levels" and represent what scientist and social scientists do outside the context of schools (i.e. scientific method, historical inquiry, research process).

• What are the benefits of a multiage classroom?:

A single learning community
Diversity is celebrated and seen as an asset
Child centered
Cooperative learning groups
Positive self esteem
Multiple Intelligences
Developmentally appropriate practices
Independent responsibility

Dear Parents of Grace Lutheran School and Queens Lutheran School:

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Mary-Elaine Leake as Director of Grace Lutheran School and Principal of Queens Lutheran School. Mrs. Leake comes to us with thirty-two years of experience as a classroom teacher, principal, and early childhood director. Most recently she has been serving as director of the Bethlehem Lutheran Nursery School in Baldwin, Long Island. I have known Mary for twenty-two years. She began her teaching career at Queens Lutheran School, so she is “coming home” to take the leadership of both school programs at Grace. We are fortunate to have found someone with such extensive experience in both early childhood and elementary education.

With the start of the new school year just two weeks away, Mrs. Leake will be busy meeting with teachers and staff to prepare to open our doors for the first day of school. We will announce a time when parents can meet and greet her in the very near future.

I look forward to welcoming you in person!
Cordially, Pastor James Klockau
